One of the biggest changes I’ve made over the last five years is the analysis of sensory characteristics of the emollients I use in my products, using this method to change the spreadability, cushion, lubricity, slip and glide, drag, and other properties to create everything from super heavy, greasy lotions that feel like they stay on my feet all night to light, airy body butters that seem to absorb in minutes. By getting to know how the the various oils, butters, esters, fatty acids, fatty alcohols, and silicones feel on my skin neat and in products, I can create pretty much any skin feel I wish with a little tweaking.

I’ve included a number of sensory comparison charts for liquid oils and butters, and have included a blank chart for you to record your own observations, as well as my preservation comparison chart to make it easier for you to use the ingredients you prefer most.
